UCHC was one of the host locations for the first “Needle Take Back Day”. This was a collaborative effort between, City Councilor, Annissa Essaibi-George, BU School of Public Health, Boston Health Commission, and the MA League of Community Health Centers. The strategy for this event was to help reduce the number of improperly discarded needles and sharps and address the insufficient number of drop-off sites for needle collection.
The long term goal of Needle Take Back Day is to create a greater awareness about proper disposal and prevent needle disposal in household waste. There are many residents who use sharps as part of their regular medical treatment and have difficulty of finding safe drop-off sites.
